Strumble Head 27th March.

Very little in the way of birds in the cold wind, only 1 Wheatear seen. Had a Fox right out on the Old Coastguards point, only the 2nd one I've ever seen right at the head.

Barn Owl

A Barn Owl flew over the A487 by the Llanychaer turn off tonight.

Tuesday, 25 March 2014

Strumble & Fishguard 25th March.

Still very cold & breezy around the headland, at least 3 Wheatears in the horse field at the Lighthouse end including the first female.

Back in Fishguard a male Blackcap in the garden adding to the Chiffchaff there yesterday.

Pied and White Wagtails in the newly ploughed fields by the coast path above Seal Bay.  Stonechats back on territory.  2 Chiffchaffs in Porthsychan.

5 Red Throated Divers just offshore scattered along the coast - maybe more.

Strumble Head 22nd March

In what can only be described as a near Northwesterly gale, 3 Male Wheatears on the Lighthouse side. A steady trickle of Gannets going through.

A group of ten Sand Martins at Pen Anglas this morning, over 100 Meadow Pipits present some on the ground others passing over. On the sea two Red-throated Divers.

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

A single  Woodcock at Llanychaer yesterday.

Fishguard Harbour 18th March

The single Black Guillemot feeding at the top of the harbour just inside the outer breakwater & a 1st winter Mediterranean Gull on the Ferry Port side were the star birds. Two Gannets feeding distantly from the breakwater suggested there may have been Porpoise about but none were seen.

Fishguard Fort

A  Great Northern Diver and six Teal off the fort this afternoon.
A Stock Dove flight displaying at Llanychaer this morning.

Misty afternoon at Strumble

1445 - 1545: The main activity involved Gannets and Herring Gulls dogging Porpoises. As well passing Guillemots and Razorbills was a single Puffin that had survived the winter storms.

Black is back!

Still at least 3 Purple Sandpipers on the outer breakwater at Fishguard Harbour this afternoon but surprise of the day was a single Black Guillemot in the harbour. This is encouraging as there were non in Rosslare Harbour yesterday which was really surprising as there are usually quite a few around at this time of the year. About twenty pairs breed in and around the harbour walls They are much less robust than most auk species and I fear they may have fared badly in the winter storms.

Time: 09.00 - 1015
Weather: Mist

A few Gannets & Fulmars seen, Reasonable numbers of Auks in small flocks moving through.

Very few birds on the ground, just the local Stonechats & 3 Chough.

Wednesday, 12 March 2014

The Lapwing and two Purple Sandpipers were both showing well on Fishguard Harbour outer breakwater on Tuesday morning. The Merlin was a nice bonus at Strumble as was a low level fly-bye Red Kite in the afternoon as well as a few porpoises with gulls chasing them!

Tuesday, 11 March 2014

Strumble Head 11th March.

A walk around the headland produced only the commoner breeding species Linnet, Stonechat, Meadow Pipit, the star birds being a Female Merlin & Male Kestrel.
A short seawatch in a calm & pleasantly warm Southeasterly did produce at least ten Red Throated Divers as well as a few Auks, Gannets & Fulmars. Suprisingly given the conditions no Porpoises.

Monday, 10 March 2014

No sign of any Wheatears or Chiffchaffs so far.
